From Drought Stress to Storm Season: What to Watch For in Your Trees Right Now

Western North Carolina spent about a year running short on rain. From last August through June, rainfall stayed below normal. The wet stretch since then has closed some of that gap, but streamflow and groundwater in parts of the region are still catching up, and trees are slower than either. That lag is one of the more useful things to understand about your canopy right now, because it does not show up in a rain gauge.
Why the Rain Did Not Fix It

A tree does not reset the day the rain returns. Reserves drawn down over a year of below normal rainfall take more than one wet season to rebuild, and the fine roots lost during that stretch have to be regrown before the tree can fully use the water that is now there.
Meanwhile the calendar has moved. Late summer and fall bring storm activity to our region, sometimes severe, as Asheville residents learned in a hard way with Hurricane Helene. A tree carrying that deficit meets the weather with lower reserves, and it meets it in ground that is now soft rather than hard. Soil that has taken on water holds a root plate less firmly under wind load.
How Drought Can Weaken Trees

Drought stress does not always look dramatic. You may not see a tree wilting or dropping leaves dramatically, though that does happen. More often, the stress is internal: reduced water movement through the vascular system, slower wound response, weakened root-to-soil contact when the ground dries and pulls back from the roots. Trees under prolonged drought stress can become more susceptible to secondary problems, including certain fungal pathogens and wood-boring insects that target weakened hosts.
A root system that spent a year working in dry ground does not rebuild overnight, and it is now anchoring in soil that has softened. That combination is worth thinking about with storm season underway.
What to Watch For on Your Property Right Now
A walk around your yard with fresh eyes can tell you a lot. Look for:
Premature leaf drop or early fall color on species that should still be fully green
Wilting or curling leaves that do not recover overnight when temperatures drop
Crown dieback, meaning branches at the top or outer edges of the canopy that have gone brown and bare
Cracks or splits in major limbs or the main stem
Mushrooms or conks growing at the base of a tree or on the bark, which can signal internal decay
Leaning that was not there before, especially after a recent dry or wet period
None of these symptoms automatically mean a tree needs to come down. But they are worth a professional set of eyes.

How Proper Pruning Can Help
One of the most effective things you can do during storm season is have your trees structurally evaluated and, where appropriate, pruned. This does not mean cutting them drastically smaller. Removing large amounts of a tree’s canopy all at once is not a best practice and can cause more harm than good.
What it does mean is targeted work: removing dead or dying branches, addressing co-dominant stems with included bark (a structural weak point), and sometimes performing a reduction cut at a proper lateral to reduce the leverage in a limb. Every pruning cut introduces some stress to a tree, which is why minimizing unnecessary cuts and following ANSI A300 pruning standards matters. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of branch or stem failure while preserving as much healthy canopy as possible.
The Role of Soil Health Now That the Rain Is Back
Now that the rain has returned, compacted or depleted soil may not absorb and hold it the way it should. Mulching around your trees, from the trunk flare out to the drip line when possible, helps retain soil moisture during dry periods and improves soil structure over time. Avoid piling mulch against the bark itself. A few inches of organic material kept a couple of inches away from the trunk is the right approach.
