If a branch has broken, it has experienced a structural failure. Sometimes, they become completely detached and fall, other times there is an attachment still. Branches that become lodged in a tree are called "hangers." The failure of most hangers is considered probable or imminent. Probable means the failure could occur in normal weather conditions. Imminent means the failure could occur in the near future, even if there is no wind or increased load. Cracks in limbs commonly occur when branches are overloaded by wind. Cracks may be associated with decay as well.
At Asheville Arborists, we often help clients with removal of hangers. We know this can be worrisome when it is overhanging a house or car. If you find this to be an issue in your yard, call us and get a free estimate. We can help!
