What is special about a sycamore tree?

The sycamore tree is very popular in the Asheville area. In fact, sycamore trees are very popular in many cities in the U.S., often planted along the side of roads. Sycamore trees are easy to identify:

  • The bark has a camouflage pattern

  • The bark peels off in patches

  • The wood is light gray or white under the bark

  • Sycamore trees can grow to be 100 feet tall

  • Another distinguishing feature is the seed pod

This is what they look like:

Why are they so popular? They look nice, are fast-growing, provide good shade, and don't need much pruning.

Sycamore trees have a few issues to consider before planting. They are considered messy trees, they are prone to attacks from insects, and diseases.

We like the sycamore trees because they can add character to your landscape, with their ashy white bark and lush green foliage. They also house food and nesting sites for birds including red-tailed hawks, woodpeckers, and hummingbirds.
